
Dealing with Dead Zones in Your Annealing Kiln
If you’ve spent any time with an annealing kiln, you know the frustration of “dead zones.” You pull out a piece of glassware only to find it’s cracked because the heat just couldn’t reach a weird curve or a tight corner. It happens because standard convection heating relies on air, and air is lazy—it doesn’t like to squeeze into complex shapes. That’s why we moved away from air and started using medium-wave quartz heater tubes. Instead of hoping the air carries the heat, we use direct radiant energy. Why medium-wave? Here’s the thing: medium-wave infrared radiation actually soaks into the glass. It doesn’t just bounce off the surface like short-wave options do. It penetrates the walls of the vessel. By angling these tubes around the workpiece, you basically wrap the heat around the glass. No more “shadows,” no more cold spots. Just an even, deep soak of heat everywhere. The gear side of things We use high-purity quartz because these things take a beating with constant heating and cooling. We’ve tuned the power density so you hit that sweet spot for annealing without accidentally scorching the glass. You can pick the length and wattage that fits your specific kiln. If you’re working with thick-walled lab flasks, you’ll want the high-wattage tubes for that extra punch. Just a heads-up: if you crank up the heat density, keep a close eye on your PID controllers. You don’t want to overshoot your target temperature and ruin a batch. Setting it up (and keeping it alive) These are designed to be drop-in replacements for your old elements. They wire right into your existing power rails. Just make sure your connectors can handle the heat—nothing kills a mood like a melted connector. One warning: quartz is fragile. Like, really fragile. If your loading arm bumps a tube, it’s going to snap. I highly recommend putting up some protective guards. Just make sure they don’t block the IR rays. Once they’re in, every single curve of your glassware gets the same amount of heat. It’s a huge relief to see your scrap rates finally drop.
