
Why You Can’t Just Put Any Heater in a Wet Room
Putting infrared heaters in a bathroom or an outdoor wash area is a bit like playing with fire—literally. You’ve got electricity and water vapor hanging out in the same space. That’s a recipe for disaster if you use standard gear. To keep things from going sideways, we lean on IP66-rated housings and explosion-proof quartz tubes. Here is why that actually matters.
The “Pop” Factor
If you’ve ever dropped a cold glass into boiling water, you know what happens. It shatters. Standard quartz tubes do the same thing. One stray drop of cold water hits a glowing hot element, and crack—thermal shock. It’s messy and dangerous. That’s why we use explosion-proof quartz. It’s got a reinforced outer layer or a special gas fill. If the glass does crack, it doesn’t spray shards across the room. It stays contained. It’s basically a safety net for your hardware.
Keeping the Water Out
An IP66 rating is just a fancy way of saying the unit is tight. Dust can’t get in, and it can handle a direct blast of water without flinching. We spend a lot of time sealing the wiring entries and the lens. If moisture sneaks into the electrical terminals, you’re looking at short circuits or fried wiring. No one wants to deal with that. One quick tip: check your circuit breaker. High-wattage lamps pull a lot of juice. If your wiring is too thin, you’ll notice the heat dropping off and the voltage dipping. It just won’t feel as warm.
The Trade-offs
Nothing is perfect. Because explosion-proof quartz has that extra protective layer, it changes how the heat moves. You might notice it takes a few seconds longer to warm up than a clear tube would. Also, those IP66 seals make the unit a bit heavier. It’s not the kind of thing you can just pop open for a quick peek. Once it’s sealed, it’s sealed. If you mess with the cover, you risk letting the moisture in. And for the love of everything, wire it into a GFCI. The hardware handles the water and the heat, but the GFCI is there to protect the person standing in the shower.
