
Getting Glass Annealing Right with Ultra-Long IR Heaters
If you’ve ever worked with continuous glass annealing, you know the nightmare of internal stress. One wrong move with your thermal gradients and you’ve got cracks. It’s a headache. When you’re running an ultra-long tunnel kiln, standard lamps just don’t do the job. They’re too short. We’ve found that the real secret is using custom infrared units that stretch over 2 meters. Why? Because it kills the gaps. Fewer gaps mean a much smoother ride for the glass.
The struggle with long tubes
Here’s the thing: you can’t just take a regular lamp and stretch it out. If you do, you’ll deal with voltage drops and weird thermal expansion. You’ll end up with “cold spots” right in the middle of your tunnel, which is the last thing you want. To fix this, we use high-wattage quartz envelopes. We spend a lot of time calibrating the tungsten coil density so the heat stays steady from one end to the other. Plus, a quick heads-up on the wiring. If you go with high-voltage setups to save on cabling, just make sure your electrical panels can actually handle the load. It’s a lot of power.
Fighting gravity and vibration
A 2-meter glass tube is heavy. If you don’t support it right, it’ll bow. It’s as simple as that. To keep things straight, we suggest mounting points every 500mm to 800mm. It keeps the tube from sagging and keeps your heat distribution predictable. And then there are the connectors. We use industrial-grade terminals because installation can be rough. You want something that locks in tight. If the connection is loose, vibration in the kiln can cause arcing, and then your lamp is toast.
Making it work in the kiln
The goal is to keep the glass in the heat zone without any interruptions. By using these 2m+ units, we get rid of the “stripe effect”—those annoying temperature lines you see when you have too many gaps between short lamps. One last tip: these things put out a massive amount of radiant heat. Seriously. Make sure your housing cooling system is up to the task. If it isn’t, you’ll fry your wiring and your lamps won’t last half as long as they should.
