
Getting the Heat Right for Glass R&D
If you’ve ever tried using a standard, off-the-shelf lamp for glass molding, you know the frustration. They’re designed to spread heat evenly. But in the lab, “even” isn’t always what you need. Sometimes you need a sharp thermal gradient. You need to see how a new glass blend handles a sudden spike of heat or how it softens in one specific spot. That’s where we come in. We don’t just change the size of the lamp; we change where the power actually goes. The trick is in the distribution. Most lamps just dump wattage across the whole tube. We do things differently. By tweaking how the filament is wound and adjusting the coil pitch, we can build “hot zones” and “cool zones” right into a single lamp. It’s a huge time-saver. Instead of messing around with a dozen different controllers to get the right temperature profile, you just use one lamp that’s built to do the work. Need a concentrated hit of heat in the center to keep the edges from cracking? We just spec the filament to peak right in the middle. Simple. The nuts and bolts We use high-purity quartz because, let’s be honest, glass molding is brutal on hardware. These things need to survive constant, extreme thermal cycling without giving up. As for the setup, we can wire them with R7s or Sk15 connectors so they actually fit your rig. You pick the voltage and wattage that matches your current power supply, and we make it happen. One quick heads-up, though: if you’re cramming a lot of wattage into a tiny footprint, your lamp holders are going to feel it. If you go for a high-density build, make sure your housing has plenty of airflow or a water-cooling system. You don’t want your sockets melting into a puddle.
